The Differents Steps In Triangulation Method

The differents steps in triangulation method

Here are the steps in finding the epicenter using the triangulation method:

1. Get data from the 3 seismic station with regards to the seismic waves.

2. Identify the time difference in the arrival of p-wave and s-wave.

3.Base on the time difference (in seconds) in the arrival of p-wave and s-wave, we can use the formula distance = TD (time difference) / 8 seconds   ×  100 km to find the distance of the epicenter in each recording station. You will also using the scaling depending on the Map you used to find the epicenter of an earthquake.

4. Use triangulation technique using your pencil, Map, and drawing compass.

Note: The location of the epicenter will be on the point wherein the three lines are intersecting as you illustrate it using your compass and pencil.

Example:

Recording station                TD (time difference)            Distance

Davao                                            30  s                                375 km

Cebu City                                      35  s                                437.5  km

Bacolod                                         40  s                                500  km

Formula

distance = (TD / 8 s) × 100 km

Solution for Davao:

        distance = (30 s / 8 s) × 100 km    (cancel out unit second)

                         =  3. 75   × 100 km

                         =    375 km

Solution for Cebu City:

distance = (35 s / 8 s) × 100 km    (cancel out unit second)

               = 437.5 km

Solution for Bacolod:

distance = (40 s / 8 s) × 100 km    (cancel out unit second)

               = 500 km
